As long as he could remember, the United States represented freedom to Fulvio, freedom he couldn’t find in Cuba. Despite what government propaganda said about the US, he decided that one day, he would see for himself. So, after saving enough money, Fulvio made a dangerous journey out of his homeland and into the United States. He wound up in Lancaster due to the help of Church World Services just two years ago.
“Since coming to Water Street, Fulvio’s commitment to growing and learning English has been nothing short of amazing.”
Fulvio began his life in the United States with very little to his name. He worked 10-hour night shifts at Walmart and slept in his car in the daytime. Far from a glamorous beginning, Fulvio fell more in love with this country nonetheless.
From time to time local churches would help him get by through services like showers until finally, one pastor introduced him to Water Street. He had no idea a place like this existed.
Since coming to Water Street, Fulvio’s commitment to growing and learning English has been nothing short of amazing. He never let himself get discouraged nor did he take the easy route. Instead, he challenged himself daily to learn and study. If you ever saw him around, you would find him with his headphones in, most likely practicing English on Duolingo.
And through long hours and continued support by his team, Fulvio accomplished a goal he had been aiming for, for almost as long as he could remember…becoming a citizen of the country he loves and that accepts him for who he is! Now he’s excited about finding a place of his own and is even exploring a new career path that would put his English to use.
Our guest stories are all different, and their paths to success are completely unique. But it’s always an honor to walk alongside our guests and help them reach their goals. We can do that because of the love and support we receive from this Lancaster community! Thank you!
