Wanda’s journey began in the foster care system, marked by uncertainty and hardship. At just six years old, she witnessed a traumatic incident when her foster parent fired a gun at the dinner table.
Throughout her youth, Wanda faced the chaos of broken families and moving from home to home, not knowing where she would live next. Her main bright spot was learning to cook from time to time with her grandmother, a skill and passion that would stay with her for life.
As Wanda grew older, she became a mother to two children and worked as a teacher. When her children’s father became abusive, she made the brave decision to leave, determined to protect her children from experiencing the trauma she had endured. She stayed at Water Street for a few days, before moving to Milagro House for several months.
With resilience and determination, Wanda secured a job and raised her children in an apartment in Columbia, PA, where they lived for over nine years. Once her children were grown, she moved back to Lancaster City.
Despite facing a debilitating illness, which placed her on disability, Wanda’s spirit remained unbroken. She began visiting Water Street Mission’s Outreach Center for groceries, not just for herself but to cook for her neighbors in need. She would even prepare meals for those living on the streets if she could.
Wanda’s connection with Water Street Mission only deepened as she found more ways to give back. She now volunteers at the Outreach Center, sorting and handing out groceries to neighbors in need. Her tender heart shines through as she continues to cook for her family of Outreach Center Volunteers several times a week, truly filling her food with love.
Wanda’s story is a testament to the difference one person can make, but it’s also a testimony to the importance of community. Thank you for being a part of ours!
